2024
Participatory installation and activation
MIFA Residency Studio, Miami, FL
Activated at Blue & Gold, Switch Art Gallery
Performance activation presented at Switch Art Gallery, Miami, FL

DESCRIPTION
Acts of Rewriting transforms a room entirely covered in newspapers into a participatory writing field. Walls, ceiling, and floor are lined with printed media, forming an immersive surface of mediated narratives.
Visitors are invited to intervene directly: writing, drawing, attaching fragments of text, or composing new statements over the existing headlines. During activation, the artist inhabits the space wearing a red garment to which participants’ texts are temporarily affixed, extending the installation onto the body.
The work accumulates gestures rather than objects, turning the room into a layered surface of collective inscription.
CONTEXT
The installation confronts the authority of mediated language by exposing it as provisional and permeable. By inviting intervention, the work shifts writing from consumption to action.
Within the larger framework of Baquero’s practice, Acts of Rewriting constructs a liminal zone between imposed narrative and personal testimony. The newspaper, a symbol of public discourse, becomes a fragile ground where vulnerability, dissent, memory, and desire can be reinscribed.
Language is no longer static information but embodied, communal negotiation.
